Market Making

Market Making — Quantitative Developer

Applications open

Build and maintain your team's automated quoting strategies. Starting from the exchange's reference quoter, you will turn research into reliable trading behaviour across 108 assigned equities and ETFs. Technology supplies the shared exchange infrastructure and tools; you own your team's strategy code.

What you'll do

Arm: Market Making · Places: 2 per team · Team size: 7

About QTE

Queen's Tower Exchange is a financial-markets simulation for Imperial College London students, combining live market data with student-built trading strategies and simulated capital.

Responsibilities

  • Implement fair-value signals, quote updates, sizing and position checks.
  • Work with researchers to turn an idea into a testable strategy.
  • Test stale data, partial fills, rejected orders and connection failures.
  • Handle cancellations and recovery during risk restrictions and session boundaries.
  • Keep code versions, parameters and deployment changes traceable.

What success looks like

Strategy code that behaves predictably, supports the desk's quoting obligations and helps researchers test improvements. Team scoring reflects trading quality, market share and inventory discipline, so reliability directly affects the result.

Prerequisite knowledge

  • Confidence writing and debugging programs in Python or another general-purpose language.
  • Basic understanding of data structures, version control and testing.
  • Experience completing a coding project through coursework, personal work or a team activity.
  • Willingness to investigate failures carefully and explain technical choices to teammates.

Professional software or finance experience is not required.

Useful, but not required

Python, event-driven programming, APIs or experience analysing time-series data.

What you'll be taught

Much of your learning will take place during a dedicated training week, held after teams are selected and before trading begins. Your Head of Arm will deliver lectures exclusively for the teams in your arm, giving you a strong grounding in the concepts and tools you will use in your role.

  • How market-making strategies place quotes and manage inventory.
  • The QTE strategy runtime, API, reference quoter and recorded-session tools.
  • Trading-specific failure cases, including delayed orders and cancellations that require fresh submissions.
  • How to compare strategy versions and monitor a running trading system.
